Volunteer to work at ONA10

Update 9/17: We’re closing out volunteer submissions. Thanks for such a strong response and for making it possible to put on a great conference!

The ONA10 committee is looking for volunteers to work before, during (and a little bit after) the conference. Come meet and work alongside the best minds in online journalism, and revel in the satisfaction of pulling off one of the best events in the industry.

Qualifications: A nice smile, a love of digital journalism (and journalists) and a firm commitment.

In return, you’ll get a nice discount and guaranteed registration to what has been a sold-out conference three years running. If you volunteer a half day, you’ll get a half day free. If you volunteer a full day, you’ll get a full day free. That’s plenty of camaraderie, lots of sugar and caffeine, and reasonable hours that allow you time to network and take advantage of what’s at the conference.

If you’re planning to attend or, even better, are already in the Washington, D.C. area, fill out the ONA10 Volunteer Signup Form below and tell us about yourself.

You’ll be assigned a slot or slots based on your availability and where we need the most help, based on the list below. We’ll be updating this list as we get closer to the conference:

Wednesday, Oct. 27

  • The annual bag-stuffing event: 15 volunteers

Thursday, Oct. 28

  • Registration desk: 6 volunteers
  • Career Summit & Job Fair: 2 volunteers
  • Job Fair: 1 volunteer
  • Pre-conference workshop assistants: 8 volunteers
  • Opening Night Reception: 4 volunteers

Friday, Oct. 29

  • Registration desk: 8 volunteers
  • Un-conference session guide, promotion: 6 volunteers
  • Panel/Session guides, before and after: 15 volunteers
  • Morning keynote speaker: 2 volunteers
  • Lunch and keynote speaker: 2 volunteers
  • Networking reception: 2 volunteers

Saturday, Oct. 30

  • Registration desk: 8 volunteers
  • Un-conference session guide, promotion: 6 volunteers
  • Panel/Session guides: 15 volunteers
  • Morning keynote speaker: 2 volunteers
  • Lunch: 1 volunteer
  • Online Journalism Awards Banquet: 7 volunteers

Don’t forget, fill out the ONA10 Volunteer Signup Form and let us know the days and hours you’re available. We’ll contact you in the coming weeks to confirm your participation and give you the discount code for registration, which will open in early May.

    I'd be happy to volunteer for ONA 10. I just submitted my application, too.

    By the way, thanks for the chuckle because of your statement on the volunteer application that “lots of sugar and caffeine” would be available for the volunteers! That's so funny to me!!

    Here's why I'm so amused: For years, I used to NEED LOTS OF sugar and caffeine (as you offer) to meet my frequent article deadlines. (At the time, I was working as either a reporter at a daily newspaper or as a freelancer.)

    But in 1998, this sugar-addicted journalist reluctantly kicked sweets and refined carbs on doctor's orders to rid me of my 44 mysterious ailments. (I'd cut out caffeine years earlier, also, on doctor's s orders.)

    Fast forward 12 years. I'm now a sugar expert, freelance journalist, author of the book Sugar Shock (Berkley Books), life coach and health coach. In fact, right now, I'm on deadline for my next book, Beyond Sugar Shock (for Hay House). But because of what I learned from my sugar-and-caffeine-triggered health challenges and the hundreds of sources I interviewed, I'm now facing my impending deadlines in a much better way, with calm, energy and better concentration.

    So now, as a former sugar-and-caffeine-addicted journalist, I do workshops for companies, especially media companies, on this subject: “On a Deadline? 10 Tips to Get Your Story or Project Done on Time With No Stress, More Energy & Better Results™.”

    I just had to share this, because of your “lots of sugar and caffeine” comment on the volunteer application.

    By the way, when I volunteer at ONA 10, I'll bring extra organic almonds and sunflower seeds and other healthy snacks to share with fellow volunteers! : )
