New Technology Advances Make Spain A Media Powerhouse

Content that will drive the audience is the force that pushes Spanish journalists to deliver successful material online, on television and on the radio.

In "Digital Media in Spain and Europe", a panel of international journalists discussed the advances that are helping to shape Spanish media into an excellent source of news information.

"Real time news has made elpais.com stronger," said Lydia Aguirre, Director of El Pais Digital. The site, elpais.com gives an extensive view of top headlines around the world, including the US election 2008, hurricane Ike coverage, a deadly train crash in California, and recent bombings in New Dehli, all done in real time.

"We have the most respected newspapers in the world, in the Spanish language," said Aguirre. "We have stronger, better resources in print and online."

The role of both El Pais online and in print is to have two narratives and one agenda. "Quality journalists can be successful on the net," said Aguirre.

The Web site is user-friendly and interactive. Users can roll over any article and view the contents translated from Spanish to any language of their choosing. Videos on the site are updated daily, as well as blogs on topics such as the root of the poor agricultural profitability, and FARC and universities to name a few.

"We were very happy when we discovered that all of the hard stuff is successful on the net if we do it the right way," said Aguirre.

Catalan Broadcasting Corporation owns four television stations, four radio stations, and server portals and websites.

"The future focus of our corporation is to attract Latin American and U.S. Hispanic audiences," said Ferran Clavell, Head of Content for TV3 Digital.

Catalan Broadcasting Corporation is a multi-platform distribution with TV, radio, web, mobile, telecast, podcasting, and interactive TV.

Teletext, a new innovation transports news through the Television.

"It allows our audience to view news as it occurs," said Clavell. "Our role is to deliver news to viewers, listeners and readers."
